Book Review Monday || Girl Online by Zoe Sugg

Hello BloggerBeans,

I finally finished Zoe's book! This post may be a week late but here it is x

Zoe Sugg is most known for her YouTube channel and blog and goes by the name of 'Zoella'. Before starting, Zoe's book did cause a little controversy as it was brought to light that Zoe had help from a ghost-writer to help her. For me it came as a slight shock but I was not one to go and state my opinion until I got both sides of the story. Zoe is not known for her writing so when penned with the task of writing a novel of course she was going to have some help - how much help she had, we do not know.  Many people who are well known and write books get people to help them, some more than others and when reading Zoe's book I could tell a lot of ideas where her own as from being an avid follower of her blog, I have kind of gotten to know her style of writing.

Girl online is based around the life of 15 year old Penny Porter who sufferers from panic attacks and writes an anonymous blog on various happenings in her life. When her mum's family business gets an American client, Penny is swept away from the disastrous happenings of her current life to the wonderful relief of New York city and stumbles across a boy named Noah. However Noah has a secret which may cause Penny a whole backlash of hate thrown at her.

Even though Girl Online is a complete work of fiction, in some ways Zoe's and Penny's life are quite similar. Penny has a brother called Tom, much like Zoe has Joe and I could see that Zoe had incorporated her life experiences into the book. My favourite part of the book had to be the bits where penny is writing a Blogpost as the style she writes them in was really clever as she's uses metaphorical situations to describe and tell what she is feeling.

Zoe's book also deals with many subjects including cyber bulling which was portrayed well as from past experiences Zoe has received a lot of hate aimed at her which caused her to stop Daily Vlogging for a long while and in the book when Penny's character goes through this. I noticed that some of the things that penny was saying was what Zoe in fact had said before her book came out especially this quote which summed it up for me: "Every time you post something online, you have a choice. You can make people happy or take away their happiness. Just a thought :)". Zoe also covers sexuality with Elliot, Penny's best friend, coming out to his parents as being gay and accurately showed how hard it is for people to 'come out' in fear of being judged, like Elliot is. The ending was one hell of a plot twist and I was definitely not expecting it. The ending changes dramatically within the last 3-4 pages of the book and leaves you wanting more. It was a light and easy read with the chapters being relatively small which I enjoyed. I cannot wait till book two comes out in November!
See you soon x
