Book review Monday || The Shock of The Fall
9:11 am
Hello BloggerBeans,
Today is the second last book review of January. Where did this month go? My internet is still down so bear with me on posts for another week or so!
The Shock of the Fall is written by Nathan Filer who worked as a NHS mental health nurse which gave him the inspiration for this book. His book is aimed at older teens as he mentions mental health a lot especially schizophrenia, depression and substance abuse. This book hit me to the core and made me feel so much sympathy towards Matt, the main character and it was scary how much I could relate to him. A neat little touch that Nathan chose to use was to have the book coming from Matts perspective in first person as if Matt was physically writing it in the book himself. Wherever the character 'Matt' writes the book, the font changes which is very cool. The plot is fantastically written and you are hit with a big mystery in the first chapter with the whole picture being revealed slowly. The end made me shed a tear though as the reality of a mental health sufferer was very realistically portrayed with Nathan having Matts character come to turns with what has happened in his life to make him who he has become.
The Shock of the Fall highlights mental health and the stigma around it which in 2015 should not exist. It is a book that has gotten me thinking about how mental health should not be something you should be afraid to talk about with others and instead encouraged. This book has made me think a little differently now about why Mental health sufferers are treated differently to others and sometimes told 'just to get over it' which is the wrong attitude to have. We all need to make Mental health less of a taboo subject and talking about it can make a HUGE difference.
Catch you later x
